The Five Gifts of the Spine, Pt 4

The Five Gifts:

1.    function,
2.    emotion,
3.    self,
4.    behaviour, and
5.    consciousness.

Let's talk now about how the spine gives the gift of Behaviour.  How does the spine relate to our behaviours, or actions we take?

questions

Last week we mentioned that if we are able to suspend the physical anchors of defence within ourselves, we are then able to be open to new possibilities and choices.  In short, we can choose different behaviours, or actions to take in our lives!

In addition to being able to BE different in our lives, the behaviours and actions about which we're talking are even at a physical level.  What if you had different behavioural responses to perceived stressful experiences?  What if you were able to remain present with a co-worker in a confrontational situation, instead of getting all angry, upset, frustrated (and blaming them for your mood), discouraged, or checking out?  How would this change your relationships with that, and other, co-worker(s)?  How would that change your relationships with your spouse, children, family, friends?

What are some other behavioural changes?  How about:

  1. ability to draw a full, deep breath,
  2. improved sleep through the night,
  3. lowered blood pressure,
  4. decrease in stress-related bio-chemistry in your body,
  5. improved mental clarity,
  6. increased feelings of gratitude,
  7. increased passion and creativity for what you love to do, etc.

These are just a very, very small sampling of different behaviours that are available to us.  Please feel free to add your own to this list (in fact, as you move through the Seasons of Care, you will become aware of which are important to you!).

I know that some of you may be wondering how processes like lowered blood pressure qualify as behaviours.  Well, let me ask you this; do you ever wonder why you respond to certain experiences in one way (with appropriate physiological responses), and to other experiences in another?  Have you ever wondered why one person's poison is another's food?

It all comes down to learned behaviours!  Somewhere, sometime, in our lives, we have modelled the behaviours of those we have deemed important.  Then, based on these choices, we have gone forward, creating our lives from that set of behaviours.  Through Re-Organizational Living, you can suspend the physical anchors of these old beliefs and models, and Create Life Anew!  You have the power inside you to make new choices, and therefore new behaviours.

Sometimes, when we make new choices and take action with these new behaviours (as well as new awareness and structures), we feel very uncomfortable; we may become tentative.  This is a good sign!  We are now working with new neurology, new structure, new awareness, and we haven't been there before.  We don't know how we're going to feel before we get there (one of the reasons we don't use feelings as evidence procedure in goal-setting).

Man on beach

Enjoy the ride!  Use all of what you're perceiving, feeling, seeing, hearing, etc. as the wisdom that it is.  And, remember that all of this wisdom comes from inside of you!  Now you have new wisdom with which to work.  When we ignore this wisdom, then our lives can become painful, giving us larger and louder signs (symptoms) until we pay attention...as a good friend of mine has said in the past; 'listen to the whispers of your body, and you will not have to endure its cries.'

There is still something more coming...

Next week, the fifth gift; Consciousness.
